Those with an Unbreakable Spirit: Tameru Zegeye A man from Ethiopia who can walk on his hands better than on his feet. Born with deformed feet, Tameru devoted himself to developing his upper limbs from a very young age. Tameru Zegeye was born in Ethiopia. When his mother saw her newborn son’s deformities, she immediately believed he was cursed and abandoned him without hesitation. Tameru’s childhood was far from easy—unable to walk like other children, he faced fear and ridicule from both peers and some adults who linked his condition to the devil’s curse. The church became Tameru’s home; there, he spent his early years crawling on the ground like a snake. Eventually, he realized that his strength lay in his hands. By the age of seven, he had mastered walking on his hands so well that they almost replaced his legs. He also learned to walk with crutches and would get up before five in the morning to begin his training. Among his classmates, Tameru was quite popular—he could do things others couldn’t, and he often entertained his friends during breaks with his amazing skills. Even as an adult, he continues to delight people with his performances; it is what he does best. He has never lost this habit of getting up early in the morning—when everyone else is still sleeping, he is most productive. Today, Tameru can perform incredible feats on his hands. Using two crutches, he can cover long distances, climb down mountains, jump up steps, and perform various tricks with ease. At 15, he underwent surgery, which improved the condition of his feet enough for him to walk short distances on his own. However, he has no intention of giving up his unique ability; after all, it was his hands that helped him survive in difficult times and that allowed him to earn a living. Whenever Tameru walks through Addis Ababa, holding his body on his crutches, passersby stop to watch. Of course, he could walk in a more conventional way, but he has grown used to the attention—like any performer, he takes pride in his skills and loves the admiration of the crowd.
