Almost immediately after winning the jackpot, David Ashcroft admitted to the press that he actually had little place to spend his money. He was unmarried, had no desire to travel abroad, and his only passion was furniture restoration.
As the saying goes, easy money seldom brings true happiness; it is generally believed that wealth obtained without effort disappears just as quickly as it arrives.
The most obvious example of such “easy money” is the prizes won in major lotteries. Many people have heard stories about how quickly winners spend their huge winnings—often in completely wasteful ways. Few have actually managed to use their windfall to radically change their lives; in most cases, these winners end up back where they started, with roughly the same financial situation as before.

The same thing happened to 46-year-old furniture restorer David Ashcroft. After winning the jackpot, he continued to work at his old job and live with his parents. He didn’t spend his money on luxury items such as expensive cars or fine wines; instead, he used it to buy some property—mainly to rent it out—and invested part of it in real estate. However, all his assets together are worth less than a quarter of a million pounds.

David Ashcroft’s daily routine remained unchanged. He continued to dress simply, in comfortable jeans and plain black shoes. No one would have recognized him as a wealthy person; he refused to make any changes in his life. After all, everything he ever wanted had already been granted to him.
