Some residents of Kharkiv also recall that this alley used to be called Devichaya Street. For many locals, the city center is limited to well-known streets such as Sumskaya, Pushkinskaya, Ivanova, Petrovskogo, and others. However, if one deviates from these familiar routes, they can discover quiet lanes and alleys where the history of ancient Kharkiv—magnificent, mysterious, and proud—was shaped. This beautiful, tranquil, and unique alley is located in the heart of Kharkiv, near Pushkinskaya Street. Nearby lies the Choral Synagogue. A few years ago, filming for the movie “Dau” took place here; during the shooting, the police blocked off not only the alley but also part of Vorobyev Street adjacent to it. Only film crew vehicles were allowed access, and everyone else had to take detours. On November 13, 2008, around 11 a.m., a package was found in Vorobyev Alley; from inside it came the distinctive ticking sound of a clock. Police and SBU officers worked at the scene for several hours before safely disarming the suspected explosive device. The package was discovered by a local cleaner who called bomb disposal experts to inspect it. Experts promptly arrived along with police and the anti-terrorism coordination team from the SBU. Access to the alley was closed off for both pedestrians and journalists, as it was first necessary to determine the level of danger posed by the item. After thorough examination, experts decided to defuse the device on the spot, and the explosive was detonated. The remains of the explosives were sent for analysis in a laboratory, where it was determined that the improvised explosive device was relatively harmless—it contained no dangerous components. What appeared to be explosive elements were actually just mock-ups. It is unknown who created this device or why it was left in the alley, but locals speculated that it might have been film props. Less than a month prior, film crew had been shooting scenes for a movie about physicist Leo Landau in Vorobyeev Alley. Moreover, there is a building in this area with a mysterious and historic past. At number 8 of this street, there used to be the “Anatomical Theater of the Women’s Medical Institute.” The building was constructed in 1911 according to the design of architect A.N. Beketov. Some locals claim that the basement, abandoned rooms, and attic were thoroughly searched by looters long before it was boarded up. In fact, the walls were boarded up for the filming of the movie “Dau” about physicist Leo Landau. It is said that the building with boarded-up windows is the back side of the current Mechnikov Institute complex, where there usedally existed a so-called “farewell house.” In the basement’s semi-basement level, there was a special room maintained at a constant temperature of 8 degrees Celsius using underground water. Later, when the institute was established, an anatomical theater (a display of cadavers) was set up here. And over time, this building also came to host a Pasteur station and a workshop where medicine vaccines were first packaged in ampoules in Kharkiv. Some residents of Kharkiv also recall that Vorobyev Alley used to be called Devichaya Street. We have previously written about the origins of streets such as Chebotarskaya, Rymskaya, Gogol, Pushkinskaya, and Katsarskaya in Kharkiv.
