Niemand weiß genau, wann und unter welchen Umständen der erste Cocktail entstanden ist. Es gibt jedoch mindestens drei Legenden, die dazu beitragen, diese Geschichte zu erklären.

The first legend, the most romantic one, dates back to 1770. In those distant times, the owner of a bar located near New York lost his favorite rooster.

The owner announced that whoever found the rooster would marry his daughter. After some time, an army officer brought the rooster back to the barowner—only to find that it had lost its tail by then. The barowner had no choice but to announce the upcoming wedding to all his customers. His daughter, who worked at the bar, became so nervous that she started mixing different drinks together. These drinks were immediately called “cocktail” – meaning “rooster tail”.

The second legend claims that in the 15th century, in the French province of Charente, people already mixed wines and spirits, calling this mixture “coquetelle”. This is how the term “cocktail” eventually originated.

The third legend tells us that the first cocktail appeared in England. The word “cocktail” itself comes from the vocabulary of horse racing enthusiasts, who used it to refer to crossbred horses whose tails resembled those of roosters.

< p>Perhaps this drink became the favorite of French officers during the American War of Independence, when they often served it near the colonies that were rebelling against British rule. This war ultimately led to the formation of the southern states of the United States. Nevertheless, it is undeniable that cocktails truly achieved their fame in the 1920s in America – when they became the preferred (though still illegal) alcoholic beverage for thousands of people who defied the harsh “Prohibition Law”. From 1919, when the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution came into effect despite President Woodrow Wilson’s veto, until 1933, when alcohol consumption was once again legalized in the United States, cocktails enjoyed their rise to glory.
