**Harbin Central Department Store**
The Central Department Store was established in 1933 as a model department store within the framework of the Kharkiv Joint Stock Company. Its location was determined by the three-hundred-year-old history of trade development in the city of Kharkiv. The square where markets were held on festive occasions was formerly known by various names over the years: People’s Square, Lobnoye Square, Torgovaya Square, Pavlovskaya Square – and since January 1919, it has been called Rosa Luxembourg Square.
The Soviet Council of People’s Commissars decided to build a modern department store on the site of the old market stalls. This was one of the first such stores in Ukraine. Starting in December 1934, the department store came under the jurisdiction of the USSR Ministry of Internal Trade and was officially named “Kharkiv Central Model Department Store”.
During the Great Patriotic War, the building was largely destroyed. Its restoration to its present form was completed by the mid-1950s. After the war, it came under the management of the Ukrainian Department Stores Administration, and since 1969, it has been governed by the Kharkiv City Trade Office.
