Satan's Castle, Satanov
The first written mention of the settlement of Satanov dates back to 1431. It was acquired by the Odrovonzhev family and was in their possession for almost 300 years.
The idea of creating the Satan's castle
Satan's stone castle was built toprotect the population from frequent raids by Tatars. It is located on the banks of the Zbruch River and was built around the 5th century. Earlier on its territory were also defensive fortifications. In the 7th century, Satanov became the possession of the Senyavsky family. It was they who rebuilt it and strengthened it, giving it a pentagonal shape.
The village suffered greatly from the raids of the Tatar army. The Satans were robbed and destroyed many times, but the local population restored it again and again. By the way, it is from Satanov that the well-known Severin Nalivaiko comes from. In 1742 A. Senyavsky once again rebuilds the fortifications and the castle. He built internal walls, which he divided with the outer ones by means of a ditch. The total area of the fortress was 1.5 hectares, and the thickness of the walls was 1.5 meters. The length of the walls was from 65 to 105 meters. Here, on a visit to the Senyavsky, Peter the Great also visited.
In the 19th century, part of the fortress was converted to a sugar factory, which was in working condition until the end of the 20th century.
Satan's Castle today
In our time from the castle there were three corner towers and one round, which stands alone, as well as some parts of the fortress walls.

There are several legends about the origin of the rock. According to one of them, in the old days there lived a rich and greedy landowner. One day a poor and hungry woman came to her with a request to give her a loaf of bread, but instead of eating she gave her a stone cobblestone. Struck by the greed of the landowner, the woman angrily said: And let you yourself be petrified! - and at the same instant the rich man turned into a rock.

Another name - the Bishop - was given by the Austrian colonists.
