The Basilian monastery, built by Count Franciszek Pototsky in 1765, belongs to the oldest buildings in Uman. In the possession of the monastery were two villages, schools and cells for the residence of ministers, as well as the city square where the church stood.

Like all institutions of that rebellious time, the Umian Basilian hearth has experienced many adversities. The most tragic event occurred during the peasant war of 1768, when the rebels killed more than a hundred students. These events went down in history under the name "Uman Massacre". But soon the life of the monastery continued.

The problems began after the entry of Uman into the Russian Empire. The Polish uprisings of 1830-1831 did not pass without a trace. Three years later, the Russian authorities liquidated the Basilian Monastery. First, a hospital was placed in the building, then military barracks. In the Soviet years there were army units here.

In 2006, the building passed under the control of the State Historical and Architectural Reserve "Old Uman". Now, despite the poor condition, the walls of the reserve regularly hold exhibitions, literary readings and art fairs. Thus, the organizers continue the cultural and educational work of the teachers and mentors of the monastery.
