Botanical Garden named after Alexander Fomin

The Botanical Garden named after Fomin is located in the historical center of Kiev, behind the red building of the University. Shevchenko. In one of the oldest botanical gardens in Ukraine, which covers an area of only 22 hectares, is concentrated a huge number of rare plants of unparalleled beauty, which forces the people of Kiev to come here again and again.

The gardenitself is divided into two parts - scientific and parks. The park zone is open for visits at any time. Especially popular in the spring, during the flowering of magnolia, which there are about 40 species. The scientific part is also accessible for visits, but only accompanied by a guide. There is a legend according to which the territory, where the botanical garden is now, belonged to Lybidi - the sister of the founders of the city of Kiev. In the valley once full of the same river, flowing into the Dnieper, and the garden of the name of Fomin was defeated.

Its current name was given to the botanical garden after the death of its director, who held this post for about a quarter of a century. It was Alexander Vasilievich Fomin who managed to popularize botanical science. In addition, he made a titanic effort to save plants during the fierce winter of 1919-1920. His credit is also the preservation of most rare species during the German occupation of the city.

The present Botanical Garden named after Fomin is not only a scientific research institution, but also a real decoration of Kiev. Many students have the opportunity to practice botany here, researchers make their discoveries here, and visitors come here to enjoy the splendor of the plant kingdom.
