Church of St. Nicholas, Lviv
The church, towering at the very foot of the High Castle Mountain, is considered one of the oldest buildings of ancient Lviv. It was built in the 13th century. There is a version that the temple was built as a burial vault of the Galician princes. It is established that it was erected on the site of the old cemetery.
In ancient times, the temple was located in the heart of the city, next to the famous LvivSquare Old Market. The stone structure performed a defense function, as evidenced by the thickness of the walls and small windows. Like a fortress, the temple stood at the main gate. The life of medieval Lviv was boiling here ...
Unfortunately, the church could not retain its original appearance. From the building of the 13th century there was only one foundation and fragments of walls of limestone white limestone.
From the shrines there are kept the icon of the Mother of God and the image of Fedor of Tiron. Both works date from the 17th century. The severity and simplicity of the appearance of the ancient temple put him in a series of the most amazing works of the architectural school of Galicia.
