Great Synagogue (Brody)
A large synagogue is one of Brody's defense architecturesights. The first synagogue appeared here in the late 16th century and was built of wood. The construction of the stone synagogue began in 1742, next to the Brodsky Castle. Inside the synagogue there is a stone table with the name of Yitzhak Horowitz immortalized. He laid the first stone in the construction. The new synagogue was more like a square defensive structure. A large hall inside the synagogue was intended for prayer, there was also a shrine, things were stored for worship. During the fire of 1859, most of the city was destroyed, and a synagogue suffered serious destruction.
During the Second World War, the southern and northern extensions were destroyed. In 1960, the premises were tried to be used as a warehouse, the synagogue was repaired. But soon the roof began to leak, and the building remained empty, which led to its destruction.
After Ukraine became independent, the authorities made an attempt to restore the building in order to place an art gallery there. But the money was not enough and the work was stopped. Today the historical value and landmark of the city of Brody in a destroyed state.
