Ascension church (Gorokhov)
The Ascension church can be called the central Orthodox church of the town of Gorokhov. The history of this village is very dramatic. Here, several centuries in a row, the representatives of the two main trends of Christianity confronted each other: Catholicism and Orthodoxy. Until 1795 the local territories were under the rule of the Polish gentry, so most of the shrines were built in a traditional Catholic manner. Until now, only a few specimens have survived, including the most beautiful Trinity church of 1711.
The Ascension church was erected in 1844, during the cultural growth of the city and the prosperity of many Orthodox churches in the district. The building of the Ascension shrine is perfectly preserved to our time. The territory of the temple has not changed for several centuries. Even in Soviet times difficult for the churches, this building was not only banned from being used as economic warehouses, but was also allowed to continue worship services.
The interior decoration of the temple was largely untouched. Here you can see a large number of icons in beautiful gilt frames, lamps and vases with fresh flowers. The guests are greeted by the adorable arched gate with the image of the face of Jesus Christ. The church has both a bell tower and a dome, built in the same style and approximately the same height. On the days of great holidays, the small courtyard of the Ascension church is crowded with city parishioners.
