The world's steepest railroad
Pilatus & ndash; a railway station located in Switzerland. The unique in its kind cog railway, the length of which is 4618 meters, is by right considered to be the steepest in the world.
Its gradient of lifting is on average 38 degrees, and the maximum is a record 48 degrees! p>

The original project was submitted for consideration as far back as 1873. But with the usual gauge width of 1435 mm and a standard gradient of up to 25 degrees, the road could not be economically justified. Then the engineer Eduard Locher developed the idea of a cog railway with a fantastic slope and a length almost half that.

June 4, 1889 the line was launched on steam traction. And only after 48 years it was electrified.

The entire length of the branch car passes for half an hour.

From May to November, wagons to the top of Mount Pilatus go every 45 minutes.
