Impossible railway
This unique railway appeared against the backdrop of a real boom in the construction of railways, which was characteristic of the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. The Atlantic coast was in desperate need of a web of roads.
The city of San Diego was an ordinary port city, for which there was a shortage of railways for rapid development. At least, so they thought the local business tycoons. So there was the idea of building a railroad through Arizona. But only the future builders did not think too much about the possible geographical features of the area. Canyons, rocks, mountain passes & ndash; all this significantly hampered the laying of the road. Only by 1919 the construction was completed. Literally in 13 years, one of the seventeen tunnels was under the rubble, as a result of the earthquake. This forced to build a bypass branch. And in 19 years the passenger communication was stopped here. In 1976, the last locomotive blew on the rails of the road. Now, the road has become a tourist attraction.
