Pokrovskaya church

Holy Protection Church, a bright landmark of the Cossacks, located in the village of Sulimivka in the Kiev region. Built in the 1920s, it still retains its original appearance. The strictness of the forms and the unpretentiousness of the architectural exterior of the church indicate that it once served as a fortification.

In addition, for a long time its walls served as the burial-vault of the family of Hetman Sulima, who was the initiator of the construction of the shrine.

Now the Holy Intercession Church is a model of the early Ukrainian Baroque. The stone walls of the temple were never distinguished either by external luxury or by internal paintings. However, they were always decorated with unique icons and portraits of Semen Sulima and his wife. Some of these images are considered artistic masterpieces of the Cossack Baroque times and are preserved within the walls of the National Museum of Ukrainian Fine Arts in Kiev. In the same museum you can see the famous icon of the icon "The Sulimovsky Cover", which once adorned the Cossack church. Entering the temple, the look attracts several unique icons of that time: the "Removal from the Cross" parchment written on the parchment, the icon painted on the metal by Vasnetsov's disciples, and the icon "Undying color", which always accompanied the Cossacks in campaigns.

With the Sulimovsk temple of the Intercession there are also mysterious stories. It is said that in the 30s of the last century one person tried to cut down the cross on the temple, but fell from the top of the church and crashed. Therefore, authentic Cossack crosses, the so-called "Cossack gulls", still adorn the Sulimovo shrine. There was a disaster and with a rural head, who in 1958 stamped his feet on the icon "Descent from the Cross." They say that after the incident, he spent the rest of his life paralyzed. For a long time, the Holy Protection Church in Sulimivka village had a neglected appearance. However, after the restoration in the early 21st century, the shrine reopened its doors to visitors. Many tourists and travelers also come to the temple to see the authentic icons of the Cossacks and the strong stone walls of the immaculate church.

Getting to the Holy Protection Church is very simple, because it is located in the center of the village of Sulimovka. Each local resident will be happy to show you the way and tell interesting stories related to the Cossack shrine of the 17th century.
