Dahlou Tower Houses in China
Six years ago, these tower houses were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The first such buildings were erected in the middle of the XVIIth century, and the peak of construction fell to the beginning of the last century.
The main materials for the construction of the dyalou were stone, brick and concrete. All buildings are an example of a complex mixture of eastern and western cultures. Dyalou was intended not only for living, but also for protection. To date, more than 1800 dalou have been preserved in the Kaiping area. For the most part, these house-towers were built by Chinese emigrants who raised their fortunes mainly in North America during the "golden" races, fever. Such powerful structures were necessary to protect against robbers and other impure hands. After the abolition of immigration control in the US and Canada, many left their homes.
