The National Art Museum of Ukraine

The National Art Museum is located in the central part of Kiev. It is located in a building built in neoclassical style designed by the architect Petr Boytsov. The history of the museum began in 1899 with the first exhibition organized on the occasion of the XI All-Russian Congress of Archaeologists, which was held in the still unfinished building of the Kyiv City Museum of Antiquities and Arts.

Since 1939 the museum has been called the State Museum of Ukrainian Art. During the German occupation of Kiev, the museum was combined with a collection of Russian art and was named the State Museum of Eastern European Art. However, in 1944 the former status of the museum was renewed.

Visit this most interesting place where you can enjoy masterpieces of foreign and Ukrainian painting, graphics and sculpture. Today, the museum's funds hold more than forty thousand unique exhibits. Particularly valued collected by the museum's collection of iconography, which is one of the richest in the country.

Pay attention to the rarity of the 12th century - the polychrome wooden relief "St. George with Life", brought from Byzantium. Classical examples of icon painting from the 14th-16th centuries are represented by such unique creations as "Passions of Christ", "Yuri the Serpent" from Galicia and "Our Lady of Odigitria Volyn" from Lutsk.

The museum's collection of baroque art in Ukraine enjoys a genuine interest in the visitors of the museum. Examining the rarest exhibits, you can admire such magnificent creations as "Christmas", "Entrance to Jerusalem", as well as the pearl of the museum - the Berezniansky iconostasis.

The department of contemporary art attracts guests with pictures of famous Ukrainian portrait painters - Vladimir Borovikovsky, Dmitry Levitsky and a small collection of paintings by Taras Shevchenko.

Fans of the Ukrainian avant-garde can admire the works of famous painters Alexander Bogomazov, Alexei Grishchenko, Alexandra Exter, as well as the outstanding sculptor Alexander Arkhipenko.

In addition, the museum displays canvases by Nikolai Repin, Mikhail Vrubel, Nikolai Pimonenko, Vasily Tropinin, Nikolai Murashko, Georgy Narbut, Nikolai Ge, the graphic works by Yakov Gnizdovsky and the canvas of the founder of Russian abstract Kazimir Malevich.

Many of the paintings included in the collection of the National Art Museum of Ukraine were exhibited in various famous museums in Canada, the United States and France.

You can get to the museum by metro, you need to go to the station "Khreshchatyk", then walk on the street Institutskaya to Sadovaya, where you turn to the street Grushevskogo. Also on the metro you can reach the station "Independence Square", then walk along Khreshchatyk Street to the European Square and turn to Hrushevsky Street.
