A ghost town in Turkey, or how many people were moved from country to country

Kayakoy, or, like him still called, "city of stones", was built in the 18th century on the site of the ancient city of Levissi. Lived here for the most part, the Orthodox Greeks, and the city itself was considered very prosperous. However, today there are ruins from ancient buildings.

It all started with the onset of the First World War. The Greeks living in Kayakoy were outcasts on foreign soil, as, indeed, throughout Turkey. They were persecuted, many were killed or forcefully expelled to Greece. Out of 20,000 people, by the end of World War I only a few Greek families remained in the city, but with the signing of the peace treaty between Turkey and Greece they were also deported. Their homes went to the Turks, who were also forced to return home from the enemy country. In total, more than a million Orthodox Greeks left Turkey, and about 500,000 Muslims left the country, living there for the rest of their lives and now forced to start a new one.

But only the Turks returned to their homeland in Kayakoy could not get accustomed: after Greece, the new territories seemed too hilly and rocky. People considered this land unsuitable for life and went to other areas. So the city was finally emptied. And the powerful earthquake that happened here in 1957 finally made him a ghost of 7 points.

To date, the city is still abandoned and partially destroyed . However, many tourists nevertheless do not miss the opportunity to come here, because, in fact, this place is an example of how easily human life can be destroyed because of intrigues of rulers and political maneuvers.
