Tarasova Hora in Kanev: Shevchenko's grave overlooking the Dnieper – how to get there, what to see, practical tips
History and Context
In March 1861, Taras Shevchenko’s body was brought from Saint Petersburg to Kaniv and buried on a high hill overlooking the Dnieper—just as he had requested in his “Last Will”: “Bury me there and break my chains.” Since then, the hill has been known as Tarasovaya Hora. {GOOGLE=49.7527,31.4622}
The hill rises 80 meters above the level of the Dnieper. The first simple monument at his grave was a cast-iron cross, installed in 1861. In 1939, on the 125th anniversary of the poet’s death, a 5.5-meter-tall bronze monument by sculptor Manizer was unveiled here. At the same time, a memorial reserve was established, which today is called the Shevchenko National Reserve and covers an area of about 45 hectares.
This site is unique not only for its commemorative significance but also because Tarasovaya Hora offers an incredible view: below lies the Dnieper floodplain, several kilometers wide, with the Kaniv Reservoir, islands, and marshy areas in sight. On clear days, the panorama extends for 30 to 40 kilometers.
How to Get There
Kaniv is located in the Cherkasy Oblast, 150 kilometers south of Kiev.
By Bus from Kiev<>Regular buses and minibus services depart from the Vydubichi bus station (near the Vydubichi metro station, on the green line) for Kaniv. The journey takes 2.5 to 3 hours, and the fare is around 150 to 200 UAH (about 3.5 to 5 EUR). Buses run every 1 to 1.5 hours from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, and the final stop is the Kaniv bus station.
By CarDriving from Kiev on highway E95 (M01) southward to the turn for Kaniv takes 2 to 2.5 hours. There is free parking for up to 30 to 40 cars at the foot of Tarasovaya Hora. However, parking may be full on weekends and holidays; it is best to arrive before 11:00 am.
From the Kaniv Bus Station to Tarasovaya Hora
The distance is approximately 3 km. It can be walked in 35–40 minutes via the city center, or a taxi costs 50–70 UAH (1–1.5 EUR). Urban buses routes #1 and #3 stop at “Shevchenko Museum”; from there, it’s another 10-minute walk uphill. The fare is 8–10 UAH.
What to See
Shevchenko’s Tomb and Statue
The main attraction is the tomb itself, located at the top of the hill with its bronze statue. {GOOGLE=49.7531,31.4619} The monument depicts Shevchenko in his full height, with his coat unbuttoned, as if walking towards the wind from the Dnieper. At the base of the statue lies a granite plaque bearing his last will. Fresh flowers are always placed here, and on March 9th (the poet’s birthday), thousands of people gather.
Shevchenko Memorial Museum
Located within the reserve area at the foot of the hill. {GOOGLE=49.7512,31.4607} The exhibition displays Shevchenko’s personal belongings, his lifetime editions of “The Kobzar,” as well as his paintings and graphic works (he was also a talented artist). It also includes documents about his exile and final years. The museum has 6 exhibition halls; a visit takes approximately 40–60 minutes.
Viewing Platform Over the Dnieper
To the left of the statue, there is a viewing platform with railings. {GOOGLE=49.7534,31.4625} The view from here is one of the best across the entire Middle Dnieper. At sunset, when the sun illuminates the water, the sight is particularly stunning. Photographers often come here during the “golden hour”—an hour before sunset.
Avenue and Park Area
A shaded path about 600 meters long leads to the summit, lined with century-old oaks and chestnuts. {GOOGLE=49.7520,31.4613} The ascent is moderate, but it may be difficult for people with limited mobility since there are no steps; however, the slope is quite noticeable. Along the way, there are benches every 50-70 meters.
Kanevsky Nature Reserve
Next to Tarasova Hora lies the Kanevsky Nature Reserve, one of the oldest in Ukraine (founded in 1923). {GOOGLE=49.7280,31.4810} Guided tours along the ecological trail are available by prior reservation. Here, you can find relic forests with oaks aged 200-300 years; deer, foxes, and over 180 species of birds also inhabit this area.

Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit is from May to September, when the vegetation is in full bloom and the views of the Dnieper are particularly stunning. May and September are ideal: not too hot (20-25°C), fewer tourists, and everything is either in full flower or taking on autumn colors. In summer, July and August can be very hot (up to 35°C), and there will be less shade at the summit.
Avoid March 9th (Shevchenko’s birthday) and May 22nd (reinterment ceremony) if you don’t want to be surrounded by thousands of people. However, if you want to experience the atmosphere of this national pilgrimage, then these days are perfect.
Tips for Visitors
What to Bring
- Comfortable shoes – the path up the hill is dirt-covered and slippery after rain
What to Avoid
Do not try to drive up to the monument itself—the road is blocked by a gate, and you must walk the last 500 meters. If you want to visit the museum, do not plan your trip on Monday. Also, do not leave any valuable items in your car in the parking lot.
Where to Eat Nearby
There are no restaurants directly at Tarasova Hora. The nearest options are in the center of Kanev (10–15 minutes by taxi):
- Cafe “Kobzar” — located on Shevchenko Street; serves Ukrainian cuisine. Borscht costs 60–80 UAH (~1.5–2 EUR), vareniki 70–90 UAH, and a complete meal 150–200 UAH. {GOOGLE=49.7447,31.4582}
- Pizzeria “Chelentano” — a standard chain pizzeria in the center of Kanev. Pizzas range from 100–180 UAH, and coffee costs 40–60 UAH.
- There are mini-markets and grocery stores near the entrance to the hill where you can buy water, snacks, and other supplies.
Combining Your Visit
You can combine your trip to Kanev with a visit to the residence of composer Hulak-Artemovsky (also located in Kanev) and a walk along the Dnieper embankment. If you have extra time, consider a trip to Cherkassy (70 km away), where you can explore the interesting “Sosnovy Bir” park and the riverbank.
