Herodium: Herod's palace and tomb

This historical monument is only twelve kilometers from Jerusalem. At first glance, Irodion looks like an extinct volcano. In fact, we have before us a real fort built by King Herod between 23 and 15 BCE

The palace itself and the fortress of King Herod were built on a natural elevation. During construction, all excess soil was dropped down the slopes, thus creating a conicity of the surrounding area. The whole complex was surrounded by double walls in seven floors. In the heart of the complex was a palace with a luxurious garden. From here, the desert was perfectly visible to all sides, which enabled Herod to protect his lands from the encroachments of the enemy.
