Resurrection Cathedral (Sumy)

The Resurrection Cathedral is the largest temple in the city of Sumy. It is his, more often than other attractions of the regional center, portrayed on tourist souvenirs.

Most religious buildings in Ukraine are covered with legends. The Resurrection Cathedral was no exception. Built in the 17-18 centuries, the temple became a vivid representative of the Ukrainian baroque style. The construction of the church was actively participated by the city's founder G. Kondratiev. According to the legend, in the walls of the cathedral his own sister, the ataman of the bandit gang Mary, who his brother was punished for her atrocities, was immured.

For a long time, the Resurrection Temple defended the townspeople from enemy raids. Thick walls and a large number of underground passages made the church the best fortification structure.

At the present time, the territory of the Resurrection Church is a whole church complex, which consists of a main building, a bell tower with an openwork grate and sculpture "The Stone of Love". Interestingly, the last two objects appeared already in the 20th century. Nevertheless, these are favorite places for citizens and tourists for photo sessions.

"The Stone of Love" is a landmark place for all lovers. The basis of this sight was the stone from Cana, the city in which Jesus Christ blessed the young family. According to the belief, touching the sculpture brings love, good luck in the relationship.

The oldest temple of Sumy is next door to the Transfiguration Cathedral. In the daytime these facilities complement each other, and at dusk the Resurrection Church is lost in the shadow of its brightly lit brother.

It is curious that the Resurrection Church is the only building that preserved the harmonious combination of stone and wooden Ukrainian architecture. The lower tier of the church is consecrated in the name of Andrew the First-Called, and the upper tier is the Resurrection of the Lord.
