In the city of Kiev along Sagaydachnogo street to our days lived two old buildings that are part of an old manor. They were built in the late 19th century in an early classical style. These are the surviving fragments of the estate of the Balabukhov family - Kiev confectioners, who produced delicious sweets and the notorious "dry fruit jam" - candied fruits, which they called "balabushkas."
Jam was very popularin Kiev and far away beyond its limits. Balabushinskie sweets were delivered even to the imperial court. It is known that Queen Catherine II issued a decree on the regular supply of these sweets to her.
In the 19th century, the estate included 5 buildings of different purposes, including production premises and shops.
The author of the project is the famous Italian master Ludwik Stanzani, who served in Kiev as a city architect. Above the front entrance of the house there is a balcony decorated with an openwork fence and leaning on elegant columns. In the second half of the 19th century, a two-story building with a gallery made of wood was attached to the end of the house. Both buildings combine the features of the obsolete Ukrainian baroque and newfangled classicism. The confectionery worked here. Around these buildings was a beautiful garden. These buildings served as a dwelling and a place of work.
The remains of the Balabukhov estate are monuments of architectureof the 19th century. In 1982 they were restored. Now the restaurant "Old Zaporozhye" is located here. In the garden between the houses are installed the figures of a Cossack and a kobza player.
