Greek Catholic Church of St. Nicholas, Belz

In the 14th century a wooden church of St. Nicholas in Belz was erected. Since the middle of the 16th century a mighty stone church has been built on a larger plot, with the same cells of the convent, a defensive wall and a bell tower. The construction of these cells ended in 1743.

The two-storeyed complexes along with the church form a closed courtyard. The Church of St. Nicholas now belongs to the Greek-Catholic community. To date, the cells have been pitifully preserved and gradually more and more are being destroyed over time.

The facade of the church resembles a typical Baroque building, it is decorated with four sculptures and on both sides three-tiered towers. Near the church there is a relatively new bell tower erected in 1906.

Destination of the Church of St. Nicholas

Earlier the church of St. Nicholas narrated about the former greatness and wealthof the Dominicans in Belz. During the Second World War, he performed a defensive function, for which he paid a majestic appearance. The premises of the monastery at the church served as government institutions, in particular, they were a school and a prison. Today the church also acts as a local history museum and is part of the complex of the Dominican monastery.

The church of St. Nicholas is also very close to it - it is one of the most beautiful and notable sights of the city.
