Men's Gymnasium (Peduniversitet), Zhytomyr

The Men's Gymnasium, and now Zhytomyr State University. Ivan Franko, is located in the city of Zhitomir. The then male gymnasium was opened in 1833 and is still considered to be one of the oldest educational institutions on the territory of the whole Right-bank Ukraine.

This educational institution was very popular and famous for its traditions, sciences and teachers. The first building for her was a wooden room, owned by V. Ghansky. After his death, the building was taken over by his wife Evelina Ghana. The very one that wrote beautiful love letters to O. de Balzac, known today to the whole world. Later, the wooden house was rebuilt into a more solid, stone house. In it, the men's gymnasium lasted until 1862. Then for the institution it was decided to build a separate building, which today serves as the main building for the university. The erected house was quite comfortable and housed 17 classes for exercises. After the construction of the main building, two additional wings were completed. They served to accommodate a large library, as well as housing for teachers of the gymnasium. On the territory of the institution was created a front garden in which planted rare species of trees, in its center stood a fountain, and forthe gymnasium was a beautiful garden.

The main building has been preserved completely until today, its last reconstruction was carried out in 1919. It was from that time that the Pedagogical Institute was opened here. As a legacy he passed valuable material facilities and gymnasium funds, a library and a meteorological station. Nowadays the Zhytomyr State University is located here. I. Franko.
