Uzhgorod Synagogue

The Orthodox synagogue in Uzhhorod was opened by a community of Ashkenazi Jews in 1904. The authors of the project were the architects Ferenc Szabolcs and Dyula Papp. At that time, the city of Uzhhorod was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the city authorities donated a very valuable piece of land on the bank of the river Uzh to implement the dream of the Jewish community of Transcarpathia - the construction of a synagogue.

The synagogue was built in a fashionable neo-Moorish style then, with the money of wealthy Jewish patrons. The building of pink marble, faced with red ceramic tiles and decorative bricks, effectively stood out in the architectural style of Uzhgorod. A bright element of the synagogue was the image of the star of David on the central balcony of the building's facade. Especially pomposely decorated with a roof: the neo-Mauritanian motives were underlined by copper ornaments and figure towers. Crowned building symbols of the Tablets of the Covenant.

In 1944, after the destruction of Transcarpathian Jews, the fate of the synagogue changed. In 1947, the Soviet government gave the synagogue to the USSR Ministry of Culture, where a philharmonic society was established. So, the building was rebuilt in accordance with the requirements for similar cultural objects. The star of David was closed by a wall with a tiny window. From the roof of the building removed all the Moorish decorations, turrets. The exterior of the building has become much more modest. Changes have affected the interior of the building. Because of the rearrangements, the acoustics were completely destroyed. Later, an organ was installed inside the building. So the building of the synagogue became the philharmonic society of Uzhhorod, and today it is the main concert hall of Uzhgorod. It is the Transcarpathian Regional Philharmonic.

Having visited the former synagogue of the city of Uzhhorod, you will not only enjoy the beautiful architecture, but you will also see one of the best organs of Ukraine.
