Kirch St. Paul, Odessa
The famous St. Paul's Cathedral in Odessa is the most legendary and one of the oldest churchesof the city. It was founded on the initiative of the Odessa ancestor of the Duke de Richelieu in 1804, when the first Lutheran pastor was appointed and the whole residence of the Evangelical Lutheran bishop was created. Already in 1827 the building of the church was constructed under the project of Francisco Boffo.
In 1893, there were global reconstructions with an increase in the area of the church, the parish grew rapidly and the previous structure began to collapse. With the help of architect Karl Scheumbrandt, the building has become more spacious, preserving its original decor and style of the interior.
At night in May 1976, the church was set on fire and the building completely burned to the ground. He recovered in the early 2000'syearswith the help of the world's Lutheran community, collecting 6.5 million euros. The inner filling of the church is rich in ancient objects presented from all over Europe: wooden benches from Germany, 4 bells from Passau on the Danube, the icon of the Mother of God feeding the baby from a private collection (the Ukrainian family saved the icon in the Soviet period, it was created by the masters of Western Ukraine of the 19th century ).
