Jules Verne was born on February 8, 1828, in Nantes, France. His father was a successful lawyer. Following in his footsteps, Verne moved to Paris to study law. Introduced to literary circles by his uncle, he was influenced by Alexandre Dumas and Victor Hugo, and began writing plays. In 1851, he wrote his first science fiction story, "A Trip in a Balloon." In 1862, he met Pierre Herzel, a publisher and children's author who began publishing Verne's novels. This collaboration lasted throughout Verne's career, and his science fiction novels soon became extremely popular around the world. Unlike Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" (1865), which is illustrated, Verne focused on being realistic and detailed in his descriptions, spending a lot of time researching scientific facts. "Around the World in Eighty Days" is based on the real-life journey of American explorer George Francis Train (1829-1904).
"Journey to the Center of the Earth" has been criticized for its geological inaccuracies. The story depicts an expedition that reaches the Earth's core. In "Hector Servadac," a comet carries Hector and his servant on a journey around the solar system. In "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea," Verne introduces Captain Nemo and his submarine, the Nautilus. Jules Verne combined science, invention, and exciting adventures in his works.
Over time, some of Verne's fictional ideas became reality. By 1880, he had completed his major works. In his later novels, there is an increasing sense of pessimism regarding the future of human civilization. In 1886, Verne suffered an attempt on his life when his paranoid nephew Gaston shot at him and wounded his leg, leaving him disabled. Jules Verne died in Amiens on March 24, 1905. He wrote a total of 66 novels, more than 20 short stories and essays, over 30 plays, and several documentary and scientific works. His books inspired many filmmakers to adapt his stories into films.
