The Russian Academy of Sciences and Arts was established on February 8, 1724. According to Peter the Great’s decree, not only nobles but also children from other backgrounds were allowed to study at the Academy. For their efforts and achievements in academics, arts, and science, Tsar Peter granted them his favor. The Russian Academy conducted research to gain new knowledge about the laws governing the development of nature, humanity, and society—knowledge that could contribute to Russia’s economic growth, technological advancement, and social and cultural progress. The Academy played a crucial role in establishing the first national museum, the “Kunstkamera,” and today oversees 55 functioning museums, including historical, literary, and memorial institutions.

Russian science has produced many world-renowned scholars, such as Lomonosov, Pavlov, Mendeleev, and others. These scientists have not only brought honor to their country but also helped Russia become the first nation to explore space and operate the world’s first nuclear power plant. Since its founding, the Academy has also been active in publishing, playing a vital role in connecting education with scientific research and promoting educational development. In 1999, by presidential decree, February 8—the anniversary of the Academy’s establishment—was designated as Russia’s National Science Day.
