In the small town of El Caño in Panama, archaeologists discovered a burial site dating from around 700–1000 AD, which contained numerous objects made of gold and precious stones. These artifacts provide evidence of the existence of a previously unknown civilization. “This is truly an astonishing discovery, possibly the most significant since the 1930s, when a large number of gold artifacts were found in Sitio Conte, also located in central Panama,” says anthropologist John Hopes.
