In the second half of the 18th century, a post office was established in this square, and in 1785, a stone milestone obelisk was erected nearby. The top of the obelisk was adorned with a two-headed eagle, and in the same year, inscriptions were added indicating the distances from Kharkov to Moscow and other neighboring provinces. At this monument, government decrees and announcements were read aloud, and public punishments were carried out until 1830. Convicts were publicly whipped, beaten with rods, or had their noses torn out… Locals referred to this square as “Lobna Square” at that time. In the 20th century, since the obelisk obstructed traffic, plans were made to remove it in 1915, but it was preserved as a historical monument of the city. After the 1917 revolution, it was ultimately removed. #Kharkov #History #Ukraine
