Their origin was unknown at that time, and some scientists believed they might be evidence of extraterrestrial life. Later, it was determined that these signals were emitted by pulsars—a type of neutron star. A neutron star is composed of elementary particles, primarily neutrons, which have been compressed to the greatest possible degree.
