Joel Sartor2 photos
Well-known American photographer who gained widespread recognition for his photographs of nature, particularly portraits of animals. Since the mid-1990s, he has been a regular contributor to *National Geographic* magazine, and his images from Antarctica earned him particular fame.
Joel Sartore was born in 1962 in Ponca City, Oklahoma. He developed an interest in photography during his childhood in Nebraska. He graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a degree in journalism. After starting his career as a journalist and photographer for a local newspaper, he began sending his best works to *National Geographic*, hoping one day to become their contributor.
And that goal was achieved: in the early 1990s, he began working regularly for *National Geographic*. His photographs also appeared in other publications such as *Audubon Magazine*, *Geo*, *Time*, *Life*, *Newsweek*, *Sports Illustrated*, and in books on nature.
Looking at Joel Sartore’s photos, it is almost impossible to believe that the animals were captured in their natural environment, given how perfectly they are composed and balanced. The photographer has several secrets to his success: he always shoots in optimal lighting conditions and pays great attention to composition. He also assigns names to his photographs before even starting to shoot.
Today, Joel Sartore is best known for his portraits of animals—wolves, foxes, parrots, elephants, frogs, and numerous other species. His published books include *The Company We Keep: America’s Endangered Species*, *Nebraska: Under a Big Red Sky*, *Photographing Your Family*, *Rare: Portraits of America’s Endangered Species*, with the latest release being *Let’s Be Reasonable* in 2011.
In 2012, Joel became a member of the *National Geographic Society*. He also frequently appears on the CBS morning show *Sunday Morning Show* with Charles Osgood.
He currently lives in Lincoln, Nebraska, with his wife and three children. However, his work often takes him to remote corners of the world.
