For over a decade, archaeologists and geologists from around the world have been striving to uncover the origins of these stone spheres scattered throughout the globe, ranging from Franz Josef Land to New Zealand. The largest number of these spherical stones can be found in Costa Rica, where approximately 300 of them have been discovered, with most estimated to be around 12,000 years old. Scientists have determined that while most are made from solid lava rock, some are also composed of sedimentary rocks. These stones underwent thermal treatment involving multiple cycles of heating and cooling, which softened their outer layers. Spherical stones have also been found in other countries in Central America, the United States, New Zealand, Romania, Kazakhstan, Brazil, and Russia.
Many of these stones have been stolen, damaged, or even destroyed. Treasure hunters once believed that they might contain gold, while scientists have also speculated that in Central America, these stones were sometimes displayed in front of the homes of influential individuals as a symbol of their status. However, it remains difficult to explain the purpose of these stones in regions such as New Zealand or Franz Josef Land.
