House No. 13 on Darwin Street

Former residence of the biologist D.A. Alchevsky, a professor at Kharkiv University. In the author’s own words (A.N. Beketov, 1896), the building was designed in the “Mauritanian style” – a fusion of Gothic and Arab architectural elements. This style is evident in the building’s exterior features, such as the pointed arches, intricate cornices, “curly” columns, and ornate towers. Internally, the building features elaborate decorative stucco work (partially preserved). At various times, it served as the headquarters of the Women’s Mutual Aid Society, the first co-educational grammar school for boys and girls, and later the Ukrainian-British College.
