]. The former residence of Mayor E. E. Uruypin, this house was built at the end of the 18th century. Nestled at the beginning of one of the oldest streets in Kharkiv, it is hidden among the monumental, towering buildings – House No. 4. At first glance, it appears to be a low, unremarkable, small one-story building with a portrait and plaque listing someone’s name. But in fact, this structure can tell us a great deal, as it is one of the oldest surviving residential houses in Kharkiv. Built in the late 18th century, it was the residence of Egor Yegorovich Uruypin from 1799 to 1805 – a man who served Kharkiv loyally and contributed immensely to the city’s development. Egor Uruypin was a merchant belonging to the Third Guild, who came from the city of Putivl; from 1799, he served as Kharkov’s mayor. On January 30, 1803, Emperor Alexander I awarded E. E. Uruypin the title of Colonel Assessor, the highest honor bestowed upon a civilian at that time, for his role in establishing the university in the city. This honor granted him the right to claim noble status. However, the subsequent events in Egor Uruypin’s life took a less fortunate turn. Starting in May 1803, he began to suffer from mental illness, which resulted in periodic relapses. Due to his health condition, another mayor was elected in the early 1905 year during the following elections.
