His poems were published for the first time. At around the same age, Rimbaud's personality changed dramatically. He ran away from home, ended up in prison, and began to behave in an extravagant and rude manner. It was then that the poet Paul Verlaine met Arthur, when Rimbaud sent him a letter in August 1871 along with a manuscript of 'The Drunken Ship'. Their relationship became intense and tumultuous, leading Verlaine to leave his family. In 1873, during another argument, Verlaine shot Rimbaud with a pistol and was imprisoned as a result. After breaking up with Verlaine, Rimbaud stopped writing poems. He traveled extensively, even reaching Africa, where he fell ill with sarcoma. In May 1891, his right leg was amputated, but this did not save him; he died on November 10.

Arthur Rimbaud is buried in Charleville.
