73 years ago, the heroic drift in the polar ice of the Arctic of the icebreaker "Georgy Sedov" ended. Icebreaking steamer & laquo; George Sedov & raquo; named in honor of the Russian polar explorer George Yakovlevich Sedov. In 1937, a scientific expedition on the “Georgia Sedov” & raquo; engaged in research work in the Kara Sea and in the Laptev Sea in the area of the New Siberian Islands. July 22 the ship was in the Kara Sea. Having fulfilled the work plan here, the expedition to “Georgia Georgy Sedov & raquo; It took place in the Laptev Sea to conduct intensive hydrographic work in the area of the New Siberian Islands. The research program was almost completed when the ship was sent to help the ships of the caravan stuck in the heavy ice of the south-western part of the Laptev Sea.
Several icebreaking steamers gathered here, but their efforts were in vain: early winter began and the channels pierced by icebreakers were quickly dragged in by young ice; the way to the west, through the Vilkitsky strait, was closed. The legendary drift actually began on October 23, 1937 off the western coast of Belkovsky Island & ndash; here three icebreaking steamers were overwritten with ice: & laquo; Sadko & raquo ;, & laquo; Malygin & raquo; and & laquo; Sedov & raquo ;. Sailors held firm for 812 days.
In August of the following year, the icebreaker & laquo; Yermak & raquo; managed to bring the first two, and "Sedov", which was damaged steering, left to drift with a team of 15 people, led by Konstantin Sergeyevich Badigin. The ship traveled 6,100 km with ice, while in the Greenland Sea, north-west of Spitsbergen, was not liberated on January 13, 1940 by the icebreaker "Joseph Stalin". All 15 crew members were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
