The buildings on University Street that were undoubtedly created by V.V. Velichko include those located along this street. When designing them, he faced the exceptionally challenging task of replacing outdated structures constructed in the mid-19th century by E. Vasilev—structures that were physically deteriorated and no longer sufficient to meet the expanding needs of the university. These structures flanked the central building with its monumental portico, which housed the auditorium, a church, and a library (now the “Youth” cinema). The complex, designed by E. Vasilev in a unified style and scale, harmonized well with the central university building located on the opposite side of the street (now the UIPA). V.V. Velichko successfully accomplished this task, preserving the overall composition and the historic character of the original ensemble while constructing three new buildings in the early 20th century. Among these, the new library block stood out particularly well—the building featured a severe, dignified facade and an excellent reading room on the second floor. On the north side of the library block was attached an archive building, whose entrance was located at the center of the rounded corner facing the square in front of the Assumption Cathedral. In this way, the new buildings seamlessly integrated into both University Street and the surrounding square, creating a smooth and aesthetically pleasing transition to the towering vertical structure of the bell tower, designed by architect E.
