At the same time as Hurricane Sandy and the resulting floods in the United States, natural disasters affected more than 200 regions in 41 countries around the world, covering approximately 11% of the entire land area. In Canada, severe earthquakes occurred; the capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires, and the Italian city of Venice were completely flooded. In Vietnam, the Philippines, and along the Chinese coast, the devastating typhoon Shantin caused hundreds of deaths and destroyed entire cities. In South Africa, a volcano that had been dormant for centuries erupted; New Zealand and Myanmar were dealing with the aftermath of tornadoes, while Japan faced the threat of another tsunami, even more powerful than the one last year. Nevertheless, all the attention from the world’s media is focused on the Americans left without power, the flooded subway system in New York City, and the closed stock market.
