At first glance, there appears to be nothing unusual about this painting. However, Tivadar concealed within it a hidden meaning that remained undiscovered during the artist’s lifetime. Few people thought of the idea of placing a mirror in the center of the painting. Only by placing a mirror in that position would the hidden symbolism become apparent.
In each person, there exists both the potential for goodness (represented by the right shoulder of the old man) and the potential for evil (symbolized by the old man’s left shoulder).
