Sweet treats are undoubtedly the best gifts for children during Christmas celebrations. Traditionally, candies, along with toys, have also been used to decorate Christmas trees. In Kharkiv, several confectionery factories were in operation before the revolution. The “Dmitry Kromsky and Co.” company, a steam-powered factory that produced candies, pastries, and pasta products, was established in 1873 on Kontorskaya Street (now Krasnooktyabrskaya Street) in Kharkiv, right next to the residence of Dmitry Konstantinovich Kromsky himself. Additionally, there was a steam-powered chocolate factory named “Progress” in Kharkiv, which produced caramel with an unusual name – “Photographic.” Later on, in 1896, George Grigoryevich Borman, the son of the company’s founder, opened another confectionery factory on Kotsarskaya Street. For this purpose, a new three-story building was specially constructed, and state-of-the-art machinery was imported. It was the George Borman store located on Nikolaevskaya Square (now known as “Vedmedik”) that opened in 1900 – it was the first store in Kharkiv to be equipped with electric lighting, and its redwood furniture has been preserved to this day.
