Until 1901, these were two separate residential properties. The owners were as follows: For property number 18, from 1865 to 1895, it was owned by Alexandra Gavrilovna Harina, the wife of a senior state councilor. For property number 20, from 1840 to 1871, it belonged to Ekaterina Ipatievna Kuzina, the widow of a commerce councilor; from 1873 to 1895, it was owned by Anna Ivanovna Chikina, a merchant’s wife; and in 1901, it was acquired by Abram Yulievich Sapozhnikov, also a merchant. During this period, the following buildings were constructed: For Kuzina: in 1840, a two-story stone house with a basement; in 1841, a wooden house with an attic; and in 1841, a stone annex. For Harina: in 1865, stone outbuildings were constructed, and around the same time, a three-story house was built according to the design of architect B.S. Pokrovsky. In 1887, Harina carried out renovations on this building (the architect’s signature on the renovation plans is illegible). During the 1870s and 1880s, the Alchevskiy family lived in Harina’s house, and for a time, V.I. Zarudna’s private gymnasium was located there as well. The residential properties owned by Kuzina and Harina extended from Bolshaya Sumskaya Street to Gogol Street. In 1873, both properties at numbers 5 and 7 on Gogol Street came into Harina’s possession, and in 1868, she built a building there specifically for the Third Boys’ Gymnasium, according to the design of architect I.P. Ginzh. Later, in 1901, the Southern Russian Mining Entrepreneurs Association acquired property number 18, which included Harina’s house. In 1902, it was renovated by architect B.G. Mikhailovsky, with an additional floor added. In 1906, the association purchased property number 20, and in 1907, a building was constructed there according to the designs of architects S.I. and I.I. Zagoskiny, with the participation of V.G. Kritchevsky; this new building was attached to house number 18. In 1916, architect A.N. Beketov, together with engineer Zelenin, carried out interior renovations on this combined building. It has remained in this form ever since and is now a protected architectural monument. Today, the Radio Engineering Technical School is located inside it.
