Few people know that in the country that defeated fascism, the triumph was intended to be commemorated not only through the skyscrapers of Moscow but also in Kharkov. Evidence of this can be seen in a series of projects that emerged in the immediate post-war years, aimed at radically transforming the appearance of the central area of our city. These projects involved both the reconstruction of existing damaged buildings (such as the City Council building) and the construction of new ones. In essence, the city’s appearance was meant to undergo fundamental changes, and these alterations were not intended to appear as isolated initiatives, such as Stalin’s skyscrapers in Moscow at that time.
