Sivash, or Rotten Sea3 photos
Sivash, or Rotten Sea - the bay in the west of the Azov Sea. Sivash separates the Crimean peninsula from the mainland. The border between the (Autonomous) Republic of Crimea and the Kherson region of Ukraine passes along it.
The Sivash Square is about 2,560 km². Due to the shallow water (its maximum depth does not exceed 3 m, the prevailing depths are 0.5-1.0 m) in summer the water in it gets very warm and emits a putrid smell, which is why the Sivash is called the Rotten Sea. For the same reason, the sea water is rapidly evaporating, which is why the Sivash is highly mineralized. It consists of 11 salt and bitter-salty bays.
Length - about 200 km. The width is 2–35 km.
The average area is 2500 km², of which about 100 km² are on islands and 560 km² in areas that are only periodically covered by water.
