Eugene Valeryevich Grishkovets was born in the city of Kemerovo on February 17, 1967. In the ninth grade, he happened to attend a pantomime performance in Tomsk and became forever fascinated with theater. He then began attending theater workshops. After graduating from the Faculty of Philology at Kemerovo University, in 1991, Grishkovets founded a theater called "Loza" and produced ten plays within seven years. In 1999, he received the “Antibuker” award for his drafts of the plays “Notes of a Russian Traveler” and “Winter.” During the same period, the play “How I Ate a Dog” was staged, and a year later, the author was honored with the theater award “Golden Mask” for this production. In December 2000, he won the “Triumph” award. In plays such as “Simultaneously” and “How I Ate a Dog,” Evgeny himself took to the stage; whereas productions of “Winter” and “Notes of a Russian Traveler” were highly successful on Moscow stages. Grishkovets’ play “City,” which was initially staged in Riga, later appeared at theaters in Moscow, including “School of Modern Drama” and “Tabakerkaya.”
At the Vienna Festival, the production of “How I Ate a Dog” (in German) won three awards: Best Actor, Best Play, and Best Translation. From 2004 to 2008, Grishkovets published five books: “Shirt,” “Rivers,” “Plank,” “Traces on Me,” and “Asphalt.” He is also the author of several musical albums. Evgeny Grishkovets is married and has three children.
