Former income-producing property of the “Salamandra” insurance company.
17 Sumskaya Street
This building was constructed in the neoclassical style according to the design of the renowned St. Petersburg architect N. N. Verovkin in 1916. On the side facing Sumskaya Street, the facade is extended through the creation of a formal courtyard called a “kurdonier,” whose axis aligns with the axis of the building located directly across Sumskaya Street at number 20. The building was equipped with advanced engineering facilities for the beginning of the 20th century, such as elevators, waste disposal systems, and internal drainage systems.
The facade on the side facing Rymarskaya Street (number 22) is also designed in the neoclassical style.
After the Revolution of 1917, the residents were evacuated from the building, and it was occupied by various institutions affiliated with the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic’s National Committee for Food Supply. The building was subsequently renamed “The House of Trusts.” Approximately 1,500 Soviet officials worked there until the completion of the State Production Planning Commission’s headquarters office building (in 1928), after which the institutions were relocated there. These former offices were later converted into individual apartments.
