The “Scold’s Bridle” was an item invented in the 1500s in Britain and later widespread throughout Europe. It consisted of a metal mask that fit tightly around the head and was worn on women as a form of punishment for rude behavior or arguments. It was impossible to speak while wearing it, and a small bell was attached to the top to attract attention when needed.
