Carroll moved to Oxford, where he entered one of the colleges affiliated with the university. After graduating, he spent 26 years (from 1855 to 1881) teaching mathematics as a professor at Oxford University. Lewis Carroll began his literary career while still in college. He sent his short poems and stories to various magazines under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. He also wrote and published many mathematical works under his own name. Carroll’s scientific research focused on mathematical logic, and in these works he anticipated many of its later developments. However, most people know him as a children’s author, best known for creating fairy tales such as ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’, ‘Alice’s Adventures Through the Mirror’ and the novel ‘The Hunting of the Snark’.
In his stories, he uses considerable irony to portray English society of his time and also mocks our habitual ways of thinking. Another great passion of this writer and mathematician was photography, which occupied much of his time. Lewis Carroll passed away on January 14, 1898, in Guildford, Surrey.
