Flower Festival in Thailand: One of the Most Beautiful and Impressive Events in Thailand3 photos
Legend has it that long ago, the city of Chiang Mai was known as the “Rose of the North.” It was considered the most beautiful city in northern Thailand. The locals had a deep appreciation for beauty and devoted much of their lives to cultivating flowers. This tradition continues to this day, and once a year, modern gardeners showcase their talents at the Flower Festival. “Chiang Mai” means “many flowers.” (Photos: puwanai, Shutterstock)
The city takes great pride in hosting this unique event that is not only famous in Thailand but also around the world. If you translate the name of the city into Russian, it becomes “Chiang Mai,” which means “many flowers.” Indeed, there are so many flowers here that it’s hard to imagine where they all come from. Once a year, Chiang Mai transforms into a vibrant celebration of color. Men and children, women, and musicians march through the streets in colorful and noisy parades that attract thousands of tourists. Thousands upon thousands of flowers of every kind are displayed throughout the city. The most beautiful girls wear exotic traditional costumes for this event, as at the end of the festival, the most beautiful one will be chosen as Flower Queen.
All the events of the Flower Festival begin early in the morning and continue until late at night. There are opening ceremonies, parades, flower exhibitions and competitions, markets, performances, and even a beauty pageant to select the Flower Queen. It goes without saying that Thais, especially those from Chiang Mai, have a deep love for flowers. Intricate and beautiful plants are an integral part of their lives at every stage – from birth to death, weddings to holidays.
The spring flower display is perhaps the greatest expression of this love. And it has always been that way. No wonder over 700 years ago, the city’s founders named it Chiang Mai.
