After graduating from university in 1975, Stripp moved to New York City. She debuted in theatrical performances in the productions “The Taming of the Shrew” and “Measure for Measure”. Her debut on Broadway was successful: the Shakespearean, Millerian, and Williamsian characters she played captivated both audiences and critics.
In 1977, Stripp made her film debut in the drama “Julia”. Her performance caught the attention of filmmakers, and her film career began to thrive rapidly. As a result, she had to abandon her theater career. Her first major success was in the film “The Deer Hunter” (1978), for which she was nominated for an Oscar for the first time.
Within just two years, Stripp had become a renowned actress in Hollywood and won her first Oscar for the film “ Kramer vs. Kramer ” (1979). Soon after, almost every movie she starred in became a cinematic event. Films such as “Sophie’s Choice”, “The French Lieutenant’s Woman”, “Silkwood” received numerous awards. Stripp’s popularity continued to grow, and she accepted many acting offers from directors.
In her subsequent films, Merrill demonstrated her versatility as an actress, taking on both dramatic and comedic roles in movies like “The Lovers” (1984), “From Africa” (1985), “Shouting in the Dark” (1988), “Death Becomes Her” (1992), “Wild River” (1994), “Madison County Bridges” (1995), “True Values” (1998), “Adaptation” (2002), and many others. These films were highly successful with audiences, and nearly all of her cinematic works received various awards and nominations.
In 2001, Stripp returned to the theater stage. In New York, she successfully performed in Chekhov’s “The Seagull”. Among her recent notable film roles were those in “Prime” (2005), “My Best Friend’s Wedding”, “The Devil Wears Prada” (2006), the musical adaptation “Mamma Mia!” (2008), “Julie & Julia” (2010), “Iron Lady” (2011), and others.
One of the most prominent American actresses and a leading figure in Hollywood, Stripp has won three Oscars (and has been nominated for this award 17 times), eight Golden Globe Awards (nominated 27 times), two Screen Actors Guild Awards, as well as awards from the Cannes and Berlin Film Festivals, among many others. Her unique talent and skill have been recognized by filmmakers around the world.
For Stripp, every role is equally important, and she dedicates herself entirely to it. However, she has always emphasized that family is of paramount importance in her life. She is married to the American sculptor Don Hammer, with whom she has raised four children together.
Stripp is also actively involved in charitable work. In the past, she campaigned against nuclear arms racing; today, she supports various organizations fighting against AIDS and helps sick children.
A legend of Hollywood and one of the greatest actresses of our time, Mary Louise Stripp continues to receive numerous offers to act in films. This woman, rightfully regarded as one of the most talented actors in film history, is also known for her humility and kindness.
