Mary Louise Stripp was born on June 22, 1949, in the American city of Summit, New Jersey. At the age of 15, Stripp changed her name to Merrill by adding the first letter of her second name to it. She received her education at Yale University, where she studied drama. On the stage of the student theater, she performed in more than forty roles.

After graduating from university in 1975, Stripp moved to New York City. She debuted in theatrical performances in the productions “The Taming of the Shrew” and “Measure for Measure”. Her debut on Broadway was successful: the Shakespearean, Millerian, and Williamsian characters she played captivated both audiences and critics.
