#### Ex-Housing Building of the “Salamandra” Insurance Company
(Sumskaya Street 17)
This building was constructed in the neoclassical style according to the design by the renowned Petersburg architect N. N. Veriovkin in 1916. On the side facing Sumskaya Street, the facade was extended through the creation of a formal courtyard called a “kurdonier,” whose axis aligned with that of the building located across Sumskaya Street at address 20. The building was equipped with advanced engineering systems for the time—elevators, waste disposal systems, and internal drainage systems installed on the roofs.
The facade facing Rymarskaya Street (number 22) was also designed in the neoclassical style.
After the Revolution of 1917, the residents were evicted from the building, and it was occupied by various institutions affiliated with the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic’s National Committee for Food Supply. The building was subsequently renamed “House of Trusts.” Around 1,500 Soviet officials worked there until the completion of the State Production Planning Commission’s headquarters office building (in 1928), when those institutions were relocated. The former residence of the “Salamandra” Insurance Company was then reoccupied, but this time the apartments were organized into individual living units. The building was converted into multi-apartment complexes.
